How to fit Venetian Blinds

The time has come to fit your new Venetian blind. But before you begin, to make sure you get the best fit, there are a few things to consider.

Not only will your Venetian blinds transform your window space and improve your overall interior design aesthetic, but they’ll also play an integral role in balancing the amount of light or privacy you desire. With that in mind, it’s important to fit them properly. That’s why we’ve invented this handy guide to help you.

Mounting your Venetian blind should be relatively simple, especially if you’ve ordered them made-to-measure directly from us. However, it’s important to be prepared with the right tools before you dive in! Make sure you have the following ready:

  • Pencil
  • Quality metal tape measure
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Rawl plugs
  • Screw driver
  • Spirit level

Step 1. Before you start fitting your Venetian blind

Although you may think you’ve already done a thorough job measuring your window space to fit Venetian blinds and already decided upon how you want to mount them, there are a few other things to consider before fixing them in their permanent place.

Check for any obstructions that could interfere or obstruct with the movement of your blinds such as window handles or levers.

Make sure the surface is appropriate for fitting fixtures. Walls or ceilings can accommodate, as can some window frames unless they’re plastic or aluminium.

Identify a suitable place to fix your safety mechanism.

As soon as you’re confident you have it all planned out, you can confidently move on to the next stage.

Step 2. Fitting the brackets for a Venetian blind

This part is all about accuracy, so take your time to read, consider and apply the following steps:

  • Firstly, when fitting Venetian blinds, it’s worth noting that the brackets will fit approximately 110mm (1.1cm) in from the ends of your headrail and can be spread across the width as desired.
  • Next, place your brackets in position and use your spirit level to ensure they’re level.
  • Now take your pencil and mark the position of where the screw holes are.
  • Select your first bracket and line it up over the pencil marks.
  • Take your drill, fix the drill bit and select one of the holes to drill. Grab a screw and gently drill about two thirds of the way into the wall.
  • Realign your bracket so that it sits back over the exact markings you made. Take your second screw and drill it fully into the wall. Now screw in your first screw fully.
  • Once it’s secured, you’re ready to repeat the process on the second bracket.

Step 3. Fitting the Venetian blind

You’re almost there! Just a few more steps away from completing your Venetian blind installation.

  • Make sure your Venetian blind is fully retracted.
  • Locate the swing arm on the headrail and push it anti-clockwise, as far as it will go.
  • Lift the blind up into place and clip the blind over the bracket.
  • Now push the swing arm clockwise until it locks into position, holding the Venetain blind in place.
  • Finally, release the blind and test that everything is holding and working smoothly.  

If something looks or feels not quite right, reverse the process here and try again. If you’re still unhappy, check your brackets are correctly aligned and fixed. If you’re still encountering problems, we’d be happy to help!

Step 4. Fitting the safety mechanism for your Venetian blind

Before you can sit back and call it a ‘job well done’, the final and most important part is to ensure you have fitted the safety device correctly.

The cords or chains that operate Venetian blinds can be hazardous to children and pets, causing entanglement and strangulation. To avoid disaster, follow this final step:

 

  1. Firstly, from the control side, you will need to measure from the ground up to at least 1.5 meters. This is where your safety mechanism will sit.
  2. Once again, position the device against the surface and mark the screw holes with your pencil.
  3. Take your drill and drill precisely where you marked with your pencil.
  4. Align the safety device over the new holes, take your screws and use your screwdriver to screw the device into place.
  5. Once it’s secure, wrap the cords around them, so that they’re taught and out of the way.

Step 5. Enjoy your Venetian blinds

So now you’ve successfully installed your Venetian blinds, congratulations! Hopefully, they look as stylish and sleek as you imagined.
